Northern Powerhouse Premier Trade Mission to Washington and Atlanta

March 2 - March 6

Location: USA

The Department for International Trade is inviting established and experienced exporters in the life science and healthcare sectors to join our Northern Powerhouse trade mission to Washington and Atlanta. This is a unique opportunity for you to explore and develop trade and collaboration opportunities in the USA.

Why attend?

The Northern Powerhouse has been hailed as being instrumental to the UK economy and is leading in pharmaceuticals, medical technologies and digital health. A fifth of all people working in the UK’s life sciences sector – more than 50,000 – are based in the North East, North West and Yorkshire. This high-profile mission will be an opportunity for delegates to explore the exciting potential of the USA, the UKs single biggest market for both trade and investment. The mission will visit two key cities:

Washington – a thriving biohealth and life science industry, which is first in NIH Research and Development contract awards, federal obligations for R&D and concentration of employed doctoral scientists. There are over 800 Biotech companies active, 2,500 life science firms and 70 federal labs. The region enjoyed a 700% increase in VC funding in the last year.

Atlanta – a growing hub for pharmaceutical and biotech companies and among the ten fastest-growing life science markets in the USA between 2014 and 2017, with an 8% growth in the sector’s employment. The state of Georgia is home to 433 bioscience companies that employ 19,902, primarily located in Atlanta, Augusta and Athens. Atlanta ranks third in research facility space among all USA bioscience clusters.

What are the benefits?

Delegates will participate in a dynamic group programme that will provide detailed market briefings and opportunities to network and meet with some of the sector’s leading companies such as AstraZenica and influential organisations such as the National Institutes of Health. Dedicated showcase events in Washington and Atlanta will provide mission delegates with an opportunity to present their products and services to buyers, academia and multipliers in the life sciences and healthcare sectors.

There is a £400 (including VAT) registration fee per delegate to join the mission. Companies will need to meet their own travel and accommodation costs.

Eligible SMEs may qualify for financial support of £750 towards the cost of flights and hotels from their local DIT team.

Companies must be from the Northern Powerhouse region.
