What is Exporting for Growth funding?

Exporting for Growth is a £5m European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) funded programme delivered by the Department for International Trade (DIT). It is aimed at businesses wanting to start or develop their international trade. This funding can be used towards projects that are designed to grow your international business such as overseas visits or website translation. Eligible companies can apply for a minimum of £1000 of funding of which up to 60% is matched by the applicant.

Am I eligible for funding?

Your company must fit the following criteria:
• Located in the Sheffield City Region, Leeds City Region or Humber LEP
• A small or medium-sized enterprise (SME) with up to 250 employees
• No more than 25% of the business is owned by an enterprise which is not a SME
• Annual turnover does not exceed €50 million or annual balance sheet does not exceed €43 million
• Must forecast to create at least one full-time job role

How do I apply?

To apply for Exporting for Growth funding, speak to your International Trade Adviser (ITA). If you are new to the Department for International Trade and don’t currently have an ITA, contact us and we will respond at the earliest opportunity.

I have already received Exporting for Growth funding, can I apply again?

Not at this time, unfortunately. However, speak to your ITA as there may be other funding and support opportunities available.

What activities are eligible?

Exporting for Growth funding can cover many projects, providing they are part of your international export strategy.

Some examples include:

  • Design and production of international marketing material
  • Internationalisation of website including translations
  • International private sector market research
  • Consultancy services such as interpreting, IP, cultural and language training
  • Flights and accommodation to agreed target markets
  • Overseas trade events entry and exhibition costs

There are many other possible activities our funding can cover, speak to your ITA to find out more.

Can I use both the Tradeshow Access Programme (TAP) grant and the Exporting for Growth grant to fund our trip to a trade show?

Yes, the Exporting for Growth grant can be used to fund hotel accommodation, travel arrangements and marketing material to support the trade show you’re attending. However, it cannot cover the costs of the trade show itself if this activity is already being funded by TAP.

Do I have to pay the money back?

No, this is a non-repayable grant. You do not have to return the money or pay any interest on it.

What is the application process?

There are three forms to complete: Eligibility Form, an Action Plan and an Application Form. These forms are designed to be as straight forward as possible but always speak to your ITA if you have any questions.

The Eligibility Form is completed by someone from your company and will include your business details, your proposed project(s) and any previous state aid you have received. If you do not yet have company accounts, please send your management accounts or proof of trading, along with a 12-month cash flow forecast.

The Action plan is completed in conjunction with your ITA and can also cover other priorities in addition to activities included in your grant application.

After we have confirmed your eligibility, the Application Form is completed with the help of your ITA. This will include the specific items you require funding for and one quote per item to confirm this.

All of your paperwork is reviewed by our in-house team based in Barnsley, who will be in contact with your ITA throughout your funding process.

How long does it take to apply?

Most Exporting for Growth applications can be completed within one working week if all necessary paperwork is completed correctly. The Exporting for Growth team requires up to six working days to process your eligibility form and application form. We recommend leaving as much time as possible between your application and your proposed project(s) date to ensure your funding is approved in time. Please note you must have your application approved before making any purchases/bookings.

How do I claim my funding?

As a match-funded grant, you will need to pay for your purchases up front following receipt of your offer letter and be reimbursed upon making your claim. You can submit a claim as soon as you have completed your project. Your claim will require evidence of your completed purchases to be submitted with necessary paperwork (including bank statements and receipts). If your costs have increased since submitting your original quotes, please include a brief explanation of the changes.

When will I receive my funding?

Upon your claim being approved, your payment should be received in two weeks, providing you have submitted all necessary evidence and paperwork. Payment is made by BACS into your company bank account.

Why do I have to create a job role?

We are all keen to see companies grow and job creation is an important way to improve the local economy. Should your business see an increase in turnover due to a rise in export sales, we would need to capture this as a way of demonstrating the success of the funding. This full-time role does not have to be export-related but should help your business cope with your increasing demand, e.g. an administrator to assist with additional paperwork as a result of growing overseas business. Upon creating this role, we will ask you to complete a two-page form to confirm your new employee.

To start your application or if you have any further questions, contact us and we will respond at the earliest opportunity.
